Homes with separate guest quarters, in-law suites, and casitas are becoming more popular as families become multi-generational, and demographic and lifestyle trends indicate they’ll continue to grow in popularity. My own experience has been that there is an increasing trend of multi-generaltional buyers as a parent will be living with a son or daughter and their children.

Plus, multi-generational living isn’t the only reason to consider the purchase of a home with a guest house or casita. They’re also great for earning a little extra income with a renter who doesn’t have to share your main home, or for giving caretakers a convenience on-site home with plenty of privacy. They even make great retreats for extended stay guests or teens and young adults who need a little more space.


Guest Houses, Quarters, Casitas, In-Law Suites… What’s the Difference?

You might assume all these words are interchangeable, but they actually refer to different styles of guest housing.

Casitas and guest houses are typically separated from the main house to provide their own space and amenities, like a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. They could even be a full two-story home with a living or sitting area and an upstairs bed and bath.

Guest quarters or in-law suites are most likely connected to the main house and may share some amenities, such as a front door or kitchen (though they may have a separate entry, a pseudo-kitchen, or a full kitchen).
