Arizona charter schools came into existence as a result of legislation passed in 1994. Charter schools are public, independent, state-funded schools that contract with the State Board of Education. They were created to provide additional academic choices for parents and students. Charter schools cannot charge tuition. They are funded by the state and receive compensation based on student attendance. The term of the contract of a charter school is fifteen years. Every five years the sponsoring board reviews the charter contract. There are currently over 300 charter school locations in Arizona.
